SATURDAY | AKC CGC Test
The AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test sets the standard for canine behavior, serving as the recognized benchmark for responsible dog ownership across the United States. This 10-step, non-competitive, pass/fail assessment is thoughtfully designed to ensure that dogs can exhibit appropriate behavior at home, in public settings, and in the company of other dogs.
All dogs are welcome to participate—whether purebred or mixed-breed, regardless of age—and the entire evaluation must be undertaken on a loose leash, with no treats or training tools permitted.

The 10 Test Items
A dog must successfully pass all 10 steps in a single evaluation session to earn the title.
- Accepting a Friendly Stranger: The evaluator approaches the handler, shakes hands, and chats. The dog must show no shyness or resentment, and cannot break position to greet the person.
- Sitting Politely for Petting: The evaluator pets the dog on the head and body. The dog must stay in place and accept the petting without jumping up or showing fear.
- Appearance and Grooming: The evaluator inspects the dog and gently combs or brushes them. This proves the dog welcomes grooming, handling, and examination by someone like a veterinarian.
- Out for a Walk (Walking on a Loose Leash): The handler guides the dog through a pattern including turns and stops. The dog must remain on a loose leash, showing attentiveness to the handler.
- Walking Through a Crowd: The handler and dog walk close to at least three people. The dog may show casual interest but cannot jump, pull, or panic.
- Sit and Down on Cue / Staying in Place: The dog must sit and lie down on command, then stay in position while the handler walks to the end of a 20-foot line and returns.
- Coming When Called: The dog is left in a stay (or with the evaluator), the handler walks 10 feet away, turns, and calls the dog. The dog must come directly to the handler.
- Reaction to Another Dog: Two handlers and their dogs approach each other, stop, shake hands, exchange pleasantries, and walk away. The dogs must show no more than casual interest.
- Reaction to Distraction: The evaluator introduces sudden noises or visual distractions (like dropping a clipboard or opening an umbrella). The dog may startle but must recover quickly without panicking or barking.
- Supervised Separation: The handler hands the leash to the evaluator and leaves the room or hides for three minutes. The dog must remain calm, showing no excessive whining, barking, or pacing.
Why Earn a CGC Title?
- Foundation for Other Sports: Passing the CGC counts as five tricks toward the AKC Novice Trick Dog title, and is often a prerequisite for advanced obedience or agility classes.
- Therapy Dog Requirement: Most therapy dog organizations require a CGC certification before a dog can begin visiting hospitals, schools, or nursing homes.
- Housing and Insurance: Many landlords, apartment complexes, and homeowners insurance companies waive pet restrictions or fees for dogs with a CGC title.
